UFC 293: Adesanya vs. Strickland Preview

Main Event: Israel Adesanya vs. Sean Strickland:

Israel Adesanya (24-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC) debuted in 2011 after a kickboxing career where he won more than 70 fights. After joining the UFC in 2018, he quickly rose in the ranks; he defeated Kelvin Gastelum in 2019 for the interim UFC middleweight title and, a few months later, won against Robert Whittaker to become the champion.

Israel Adesanya defended his belt five teams before losing it to Alex Pereira at UFC 281. However, he avenged the loss and won the belt back in April in UFC 287 by knocking him out.

On the other hand, his opponent Strickland (27-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) made his pro debut in 2008 and joined the UFC in 2014 and is 14-5 with the promotion. Pereira broke his six-fight win streak and has gone 2-1 since then and is on a two-fight win streak. He won in January against Nassourdine Imavov and then defeated Abusupiyan Magomedov via TKO in July.

Co-main event: Tai Tuivasa vs. Alexander Volkov

A Sydney-based Australian heavyweight, Tai Tuivasa (15-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) has lost consecutive fights by knockout after a five-fight winning streak of knockouts of his own, winning against Stefan Struve, Greg Hardy, Augusto Sakai, and two-time title challenger Derrick Lewis. After that, he dropped bouts with Ciryl Gane and Sergei Pavlovich.

It’s worth mentioning that the 30-year-old hasn’t fought in his home country for four years and has failed to record a win in his country since February 2018, his second UFC fight.

Meanwhile, his opponent, Alexander Volkov (36-10 MMA, 10-4 UFC), had a four-fight winning streak after coming to the promotion. However, he has failed to win more than two games in a row in over five years.

Moreover, several other anticipated fights are also scheduled on the Adesanya vs. Sean fight card. Manel Kape will take on Felipe Dos Santos, Justin Tafa on Austern Lame, and Tyson Pedro vs. Anton Turkal (for a Light Heavyweight Bout).
