It has been a complete roller coaster season for Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks. Following the offseason coaching change, many viewed this as a season without many expectations. Thanks in large part to Smith, the hopes for this team rose quickly, with the Seahawks starting the year 3-0.
Those who were flying high quickly came back to Earth, however. The Seahawks would go on to lose five of their next six games. This led to many fans turning on Smith, asking for quarterback changes, along with many other changes.
While Seattle won their next four games, they could never fully rebound. The four-game winning streak was ended during a prime-time home game, with “Go Pack Go” chants raining down in Lumen Field.
In all, it was a strange season for the Seattle Seahawks. Depending on who you ask, they may have overachieved or underachieved, and that includes the play of Smith. Regardless, Geno Smith has contract incentives that could allow for a very large payday heading into his offseason. Let’s take a look at the incentives he has and what he can earn this weekend.
Geno Smith Contact Incentives: QB Could Make Millions in Week 18
NFL players can negotiate incentives in their contracts in order to give them the ability to earn extra money while also giving the team the ability to save money if the player does not have a great season. In terms of the Geno Smith contract, he has incentives that allow him to earn extra money if he outperforms his stats from 2022.
Geno Smith will earn $2M for each of the following categories where he outperforms his 2022 performance (per Spotrac):
- Passing Yards (4,282)
- Passing Touchdowns (30)
- Completion % (69.755)
- Passer Rating (100.874)
- Wins (10) or a Playoff Berth
If the Seahawks quarterback was able to exceed all five of these categories, he would make an additional $5M as well. However, that is not in the cards. However, he could still have a very large payday on Sunday.
While the Seahawks have been eliminated from playoff contention, a win would give the team 10 wins, earning Geno an additional $2M. On top of that, Smith needs 185 passing yards to exceed that total. He also currently has a 70.2% completion rate. So, as long as he doesn’t drop below 69.755% for the season, that would be another contract incentive hit.
In all, Geno Smith has a realistic chance to earn an additional $6M in contract incentives on Sunday. This would be a nice way to soothe the pain of not playing in the postseason.

Geno Smith Contract
Geno Smith signed a three-year, $75M contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2023. Next year will be the final year of this contract. Given the team’s direction, his play, and the fact that he is turning 35 during the next football season, it is not unrealistic to think that it will be his final year with the team.
Regardless, we may see the Seahawks draft a quarterback to sit and learn for a season behind Geno, hoping the rookie shows enough behind the scenes to give the team a long-term plan behind center.
