Coming into this past season, many were projecting LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to not only win the Heisman Trophy, but to also go first overall in this year’s draft. Unfortunately for Nussmeier and the LSU Tigers, things didn’t go according to plan in 2025. What was projected to be another successful season ended up being a disaster. LSU finished just 7-6 after a 4-0 start and Nussmeier was benched during two games and had an abdominal injury that was allegedly plaguing him all year. Garrett Nussmeier Scouting Report
Strengths
Two of the biggest strengths that jumped out at me were his ability to change his arm angle when needed and his ability to get the ball out quickly. Specifically in LSU’s matchup on the road against Vanderbilt, the Tigers ran a lot of wide receiver screens that needed the ball out quickly. Not only was he able to do that, but he also did a good job at dropping his arm angle when needed to thread it through the tight windows to get to his receivers out on the flats. At the NFL level, the ability to do this in today’s game is imperative, as is the ability to stand in the pocket and take a hit.
While Garrett Nussmeier does sometimes force throws off his back foot before getting hit, for the most part, he does a good job at hanging in the pocket when he needs to. All three skills are crucial for success in the NFL, and it appears Nussmeier already has them all down.
Weaknesses
Some of the biggest weaknesses of Nussmeier will certainly have to be worked on immediately for him to have any future in the NFL. He struggles to diagnose defenses, especially more complex ones, which will be a big issue at the next level. While he was decent at evading some sacks in college, it’s clear that he has very limited mobility, which is a huge knock with the current state of the NFL and how the game is played.
Not only is he smaller than the average quarterback with some injury concerns in the past, but he also has real trouble playing “hero” ball. While he has great arm talent, too often does he float up a prayer and put the ball in harm’s way. While this risky play can certainly work in his favor from time to time, it’ll run him out of the league quickly if it continues in the NFL.
