Fantasy Football Start or Sit: Week 1 QBs

It is finally here! With Week 1 upon us, it’s time to set your lineup to get the season started with a W. If you have Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Kyler Murray or any other elite fantasy football QB, you already know you are starting them. This article will help you make the tough decisions for who to start on the fringes of starter territory in single QB leagues.

Welcome to our weekly fantasy football QB start or sit, and as an added bonus, if you haven’t landed on a team name, for instance, someone already took the name Bishop Sycamore in your league, there is a name suggestion with each player as well. Good luck this week!

Fantasy Football Start or Sit: Week 1 QBs

    Start: Jalen Hurts at Falcons

    Team Name: Hurts So Good

Starting off the new season the same way we finished Weeks 15 and 16 last year, with Jalen Hurts listed as a starter. Hurts gets a great matchup to start the season with the Falcons D, which surrendered 23.5 fantasy points per game (fppg) last season to opposing QBs. In the three starts last season that he completed, Hurts ran for 106, 63 and 69 yards, which gives you a floor of at least six points just on rushing yardage prior to adding in any passing numbers and scoring he accounts for. Last season, he threw for over 300 yards in two of his starts. In a dome environment with a great matchup, look for him to easily put up QB1 numbers this week.

    Start: Ryan Tannehill vs. Cardinals

    Team Name: King of Tannehill

Ever since taking over at QB in Week 7 of 2019, Ryan Tannehill has averaged 22 fppg, which is good for the fourth-most fantasy points at QB over that time. With the addition of Julio Jones this offseason, the Tennessee Titans offense, which was already fourth in efficiency last season, stands to be even more so this season. It is a good thing too because their D is on the other end of the spectrum. As such, this game sits with the second-highest total of the week, at 52.5. Fire up Tannehill and your other Titans and Cardinals, as this game could turn into a shootout.

    Sit: Joe Burrow vs. Vikings

    Team Name: Burrowed Alive

In his first regular season game back after tearing his ACL, Joe Burrow has a home matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. Last year, the Cincinnati Bengals gave up 48 sacks and did not take many steps to improve their line over the offseason. The Vikings allowed 18.4 fppg to opposing QBs last season, which was good for 12th in the league, but this is less about the matchup and more about waiting to see how Burrow is moving on his reconstructed knee. If you don’t have a better option, you may have to start him, but a wait-and-see approach would be the best route to take.

Sit: Justin Herbert at Washington Football Team

    Team Name: Herb Appeal

Justin Herbert has a tall task in front of him this week. Not only do the Los Angeles Chargers have to travel across the country for a noon kickoff, but he is going up against a Football Team D that gave up only 16.7 fppg to opposing QBs last season. Now, if you drafted Herbert, you probably held off on taking a backup or didn’t take one in which case you have to play him. But if you have a better option, you should strongly consider it. If not, temper your expectations for Week 1, especially if Austin Ekeler is out or limited.
