Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 6 RBs

Start: Chase Brown Fantasy Outlook vs. Giants

Expert Consensus Ranking (ECR) Rank: 16

Chase Brown has been on the wrong side of a timeshare in the Cincinnati Bengals’ backfield in each of the first five games this season. Despite not having played more than 40% of the team’s offensive snaps in any game, Brown has finished as the RB6 and RB11 in PPR scoring in the last two weeks, respectively. He has been incredibly efficient in terms of yards per carry in all five games and even managed nearly four yards per rush last week against a stout Baltimore run defense.

Looking at Week 6, Brown checks in at RB16 in the ECR rankings at the time of writing. The matchup is decent enough, as the Bengals clash with the New York Giants, but the real reason to love Brown this week revolves around his backfield cohort, Zack Moss. Not only has he been notably less efficient, but he also picked up an ankle injury last week that caused him to miss practice on Wednesday. Brown is a solid RB3/FLEX play regardless, but if Moss is held out, the former Illinois standout can be viewed as a high-end RB2.

Start: Rico Dowdle Fantasy Outlook vs. Lions

ECR Rank: 22

In case it wasn’t clear to anyone after Sunday Night Football, Rico Dowdle has officially taken over the Dallas Cowboys backfield. In the win over Pittsburgh, Dowdle played 50% of the team’s offensive snaps compared to Ezekiel Elliott’s 30%. Dowdle also out-touched the veteran 20-6 in terms of carries and added a touchdown reception to his stat line. The 26-year-old has averaged north of four yards per carry in four straight games. Dallas would be foolish to not utilize him as much as possible.

This week, the Cowboys will be up against the Detroit Lions. On the surface, this looks like a nightmarish matchup for Dowdle. Detroit’s defense has been tough on opposing RBs, allowing the third-fewest fantasy points and fourth-fewest rushing yards on a per-game basis. However, Dowdle is the only player Dallas can count on for any significant production out of the backfield. Volume and his pass-catching ability should enable him to overcome the difficult matchup and land in the RB2 range for fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em.

Sit: Rachaad White and Bucky Irving Fantasy Outlook vs. Saints

ECR Rank: 24 and 23

So much for all of the hype surrounding Rachaad White as a stalwart fantasy back over the past year. Furthermore, so much for all of the hype regarding a supposed immediate Bucky Irving takeover of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB workload. Instead, fantasy managers are currently left with an even and gross timeshare backfield. Last week saw White play 64% of the team’s snaps and have 13 total touches. Irving played 43% and had 11 touches. Are we really supposed to feel confident in either player when it comes to fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em?

Through five weeks of play, both Bucs’ RBs have combined for just four double-digit PPR scoring outputs between them. Take out White’s Week 1 line and neither player has surpassed 12.5 fantasy points all season long. The touches have been virtually dead even going back several weeks now. Add it all up and it’s tough to trust either player to be a starting RB2 at this juncture. Both White and Irving are RB3/FLEX options at best. This is especially true in a tricky Week 6 matchup against a New Orleans Saints defense that enters allowing the seventh-fewest rushing yards per game.

Sit: Javonte Williams Fantasy Outlook vs. Chargers

ECR Rank: 26

I feel like Javonte Williams finds his way into our fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em column on a biweekly basis. He is simply always hovering around the fringe RB2 range, and it has been coming down to matchups to determine whether or not he is a viable starter or not. In Week 6, he is back on the wrong side of the spectrum. This is despite the fact that he has put forth his best two games of the season in the last two weeks. Williams averaged over 4.5 yards per carry and scored double-digit PPR points in both outings.

The problem with trusting Williams to replicate his recent strong efforts lies in this week’s matchup. The Denver Broncos will be hosting a Los Angeles Chargers team that comes into Mile High fresh off a bye week. The Bolts rank as a top-10 defense against opposing RBs in PPR scoring and have allowed the sixth-fewest rushing yards per game. The Broncos are riding high on a three-game winning streak, and their best offensive showing of the season last week against the dysfunctional Las Vegas Raiders. It figures to be much tougher sledding against L.A. on Sunday.
