Mid-Major Notes

  • In a massive game to see which team would enter the bubble out of the Mountain West, Utah State beat Fresno State on the road to gain a major advantage in terms of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Loyola Chicago regains first place in the Missouri Valley with a blow-out win over Drake.
  • Wofford survives at ETSU in an incredible overtime game, where Wofford star Fletcher Magee scored 11 of his 32 points in the overtime period to secure the win. ETSU finished the week 0-2, getting blown out by 30 points at Furman, who is back on the radar in the SoCon.
  • San Fran is now in serious jeopardy of not even being considered for an at-large bid, after losing to Gonzaga by 30. I believe if San Fran loses another game before let’s say losing to Gonzaga in the conference championship, I don’t see them getting a bid.
  • Grand Canyon, who to me was the number one contender to New Mexico State in the WAC, suffered a terrible loss at home to UT-Rio Grande Valley.
  • Yale defeated Princeton in an Ivy League bout, which led to a three-way tie for first between the two schools and Harvard, who needed three overtimes to beat Columbia. Then on Saturday, Yale easily beat Penn at home, Princeton lost to Brown and Harvard lost to Cornell, leaving just Yale on top the conference.
  • Sam Houston stayed undefeated in Southland play, beating 19-4 Abilene Christian in overtime.
  • Toledo finds themselves back in the mid-major rankings, beating the team with the best MAC conference record on the road in Bowling Green.
  • Bucknell now sits in first place of the Patriot League by two games after beating Lehigh.
