NFL Playoff Picture | AFC Playoff Standings
The AFC Playoff picture is a little more convoluted than what we see in the NFC. It is the dawn of a new day; the start of a new era. Or, maybe we are turning back the clock, since it’s the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots atop the NFL Playoff Picture in the AFC.
The other two divisions are a bit more up in the air; the Jacksonville Jaguars currently have hold of the AFC South, at 9-5. However, the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts are both a game behind (8-5), with the Texans having the tiebreaker there. It is a similar situation for the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (7-6), who have a narrow lead over the Baltimore Ravens (6-7). Notably, these two play in Week 18.
As for the AFC Wild Card race, it’s the Los Angeles Chargers and Buffalo Bills at 9-4, then the Texans are at 8-5. The Kansas City Chiefs are on the outside looking in. They have a big matchup against the Chargers this week. The Chiefs would have to run the table while getting some help, from the Chargers especially, in order to sneak in.
Let’s take a look at the AFC Playoff picture. Remember, the top seven teams in the AFC Playoff standings are in, and winning the division rewards the team with a top-four seed.

Chargers Playoffs Chances | Chargers Playoff Scenarios
The Los Angeles Chargers’ playoff chances are very positive, and that’s because their fate is in their own hands. Before Week 15 kicks off, The Athletic NFL Playoff Simulator gives the Chargers a 78% chance to make the playoffs, given their 9-4 record and the tiebreakers they possess. The ESPN Power Index views the Chargers’ odds to make the playoffs identically, at 78.2%.
In Week 15, the Chargers will face the Kansas City Chiefs, who must win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. A win over the Chiefs would raise the Chargers’ playoff odds to 95%. They would lock up a playoff spot with another win over the final three weeks, so this is an important game for their playoff hopes. If Los Angeles loses to Kansas City this week, the Chargers’ playoff chances drop to 68%.
Essentially, getting a win over the final month of the season puts the Chargers in a good spot to make the postseason, since it will be tough for many of the outside teams to reach 10 wins. Splitting the final four games makes them an essential lock!
Los Angeles Chargers Remaining Schedule | Can the Chargers Make the Playoffs?
Can the Chargers make the playoffs? The answer is absolute yes! In fact, if the NFL Playoffs started this week, LAC would be in!
Week 15 is a big week for the Chargers, as they play the Chiefs. Not only would a win put the Chargers at 10 wins and nearly lock up a playoff spot, but it would also eliminate the Chiefs from playoff contention. The remaining schedule for Los Angeles does not get easier from there, since they end the season with games against the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos. Of their final four games, only the Texans matchup will be at home. Clearly, the Chargers are very happy they played and won those three divisional games to start the year.
While there are tough games in there, the Chargers’ remaining schedule does work in their favor, if they can get the wins. If you feel good or bad about their outlook, you can bet on the Chargers’ playoff odds in either direction ahead of this weekend’s matchup.
