Blake Wesley Draft Profile

Strengths

Despite only posting modest stats in his freshman year at Notre Dame, Blake Wesley opted to declare for the 2022 NBA Draft. From a ball-handling standpoint, he certainly has what it takes to stack up at the pro level. Wesley has an exceptional crossover dribble and uses well-timed hesitations and ball fakes to cut through opposing defenses. His handles give him the ability to obtain a bucket from anywhere on the floor. He may not be a knockdown shooter just yet, but he does have the ability to stop and pop mid-range jumpers off the dribble. Defensively, Wesley brings plenty of energy and athleticism to the table. His willingness to be active combined with his long arms make him a sturdy lockdown defender. He is always ready and willing to push the issue in transition after coming up with a stop as well.

Weaknesses

Although the foundation is there for Wesley to develop into a solid shooter, his mechanics are currently a work in progress. Both his three-point (30.3) and free throw (65.7) percentages were sub-par in his only collegiate season. Wesley also avoids drawing contact when driving to the rim. Considering his poor free throw percentage, it’s no surprise why he lacked a desire to go to the line in college. However, the fact that he lacks a consistent floater as a counterplay to his rim-finishing abilities only heightens the concern surrounding his unwillingness to draw contact. Whichever team drafts Wesley will have to be willing to practice patience and develop him into the dynamic scorer that he is capable of becoming.
