Big South Conference Breakdown

Despite the top overall seed hosting the entirety of the quarter and semifinals of the Big South tournament, it hasn’t necessarily translated to making the regular season champ a lock to win. Over the last ten seasons, the top seed has won the Big South tournament and advanced to March Madness just twice. The same can be said for the 2-seed while the 3 and 4-seeds have combined to win five of the last ten Big South tournaments. Radford, who won the tournament on their home floor as a 2-seed in 2018, will look to reverse the recent trend for 1-seeds this year. Last year’s winner, Gardner-Webb, triumphed as the 3-seed.

11-seed Campbell may be at the bottom of the Big South standings and tournament field, but are the Fighting Camels really as poor as their 6-12 conference record suggests? Incredibly, the last-place team in the standings ranks in the conference’s top five in points allowed (2nd), scoring margin (3rd), free throw percentage (2nd), field goal percentage (3rd), field goal percentage defense (5th) 3-point field goal percentage (3rd), 3-point field goal percentage defense (1st) and steals (2nd). How’s that for a statistical anomaly? Needless to say first round opponent UNC Asheville and potential quarterfinal opponent Gardner-Webb had better not take this 11-seed lightly.

Preseason poll predictions were quite accurate for the most part in predicting the final conference standings. The poll accurately pegged Radford as the top team. The biggest over and underachievers simply flipped spots from the preseason poll to the actual final regular season standings. Campbell was picked to finish as the 7-seed but, as previously mentioned, wound up at the bottom as the 11. Meanwhile, South Carolina Upstate was projected to finish at the bottom of the conference in the program’s second season as a member of the Big South, but earned the 7-seed and a first round home game in actuality.
