Today in sports history (1962), legendary center Wilt Chamberlain scored an NBA record 100 points against the New York Knicks. In just his third year in the NBA, Chamberlain was one of the league’s premier players. His Philadelphia Warriors hosted a New York Knicks team, led by Richie Guerin. Chamberlain’s 100-point game is widely considered one of the greatest records in sports history and one that will probably never be broken. Today in sports history (1985), Milwaukee businessman and future U.S senator Herb Kohl bought the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks were in the middle of one of their best eras since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar moved west. With players like Sidney Moncrief, Terry Cummings and Paul Pressey, the Bucks were a perfect spot for someone to take over a contender in the league. Kohl spent only $18 million on the team. Today in sports history (1987), the NCAA canceled the 1987 SMU Mustangs football season. The cancellation of the season comes on the back of the NCAA’s death penalty ruling against the Mustangs. The death penalty was in response to SMU’s violations of NCAA rules regarding athletic corruption. These charges date between the late 1970s and mid-1980s. The worst of these allegations was SMU’s use of a slush fund. This fund was used under-the-table payments to convince family members and athletes to come to the school. The North Carolina Tar Heels traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Today in sports history (1964), 22-year-old Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) defeated the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Sonny Liston. Liston was at the top of his game in 1964, beating Floyd Patterson twice before the match. Being 22 years old, Clay guaranteed a win, something the boxing fans have been become accustomed to over Clay’s career. Today in sports history (1985), legendary college basketball coach at Indiana, Bob Knight tossed a chair across the court. Knight apparently became frustrated with the officiating, leading to the outburst. The incident happened during a Big Ten rivalry game against Purdue.
