Los Angeles Chargers starting running back Austin Ekeler is one of the top fantasy football RBs in the league. He is more of a receiving back, but certainly earns plenty of carries in the trenches. Ekeler missed six games due to an injury last year, but played extremely well in the games he appeared in. He played in eight full games with quarterback Justin Herbert and saw 63 total targets. Ekeler’s 2019 season was the best of his career, where he earned a total of 217 fantasy points, with his FPTS/G at 13.6. He finished last season averaging 11.1 FPTS/G in just 10 games.

Let’s discuss the Austin Ekeler fantasy football outlook for 2021, including his stats from 2020 and giving our buy or sell decision based on his current average draft position (ADP).

Austin Ekeler 2021 Outlook

The Western State Colorado alum is entering his fifth season in the NFL and with the Chargers. Ekeler is known by his teammates as the pound-for-pound strongest player on the team. His grit and determination are highly contagious to the team, as many players try and keep the same energy when around him. The undrafted free agent earned the starting running back role, even when former back Melvin Gordon was still on the team. Ekeler can catch any pass thrown to him, as well as make the first defender miss almost every single time.

New offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi compared Ekeler to his former RB Alvin Kamara, as well as former Saints Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles. Ekeler and Kamara both have similar styles of play and are considered top running backs in the NFL. He’ll be used in almost the exact same situations Kamara was in last season, and that should allow for top-tier fantasy football results.

The 2020 season was not as good as the year prior. One thing for sure is that the undrafted free agent has a huge chip on his shoulder when he plays. Ekeler is one of the top receiving backs in the NFL and is only improving.

If Ekeler stays healthy and plays the entire season, he should finish the season as an RB1.

Austin Ekeler Fantasy Football ADP | Buy or Sell?

The ADP of Austin Ekeler was taken from Fantasy Football Calculator on July 17. This sees Ekeler as the 11th overall selection and RB8 overall.

Ekeler should definitely be a first-round pick, unless you are in an eight-man league. Although, you can make a great case to draft him top-five with Herbert as his QB. If Ekeler is available in the second round of your draft, do not hesitate to draft him, as he will provide stellar production once again. The Chargers will be a pass-heavy offense, and for the right reasons. Herbert is coming off earning the Rookie of the Year and Keenan Allen is one of the top receivers in the league. Williams is proving to stay healthy, and that offense should make some noise. Ekeler will be in the middle of all of it and will continue to be a leader on and off the field.
