Arizona vs Dayton Prediction | March Madness Expert Picks
After seeing Arizona’s domination against Long Beach State in the first round of the tournament, it is hard to see Dayton, let alone anyone, taking down the Wildcats. Caleb Love started cold, but as he usually does, turned it on in the second half. Love finished the game with 18 points and 11 rebounds. It was Kylan Boswell who was the major factor for the Wildcats in that matchup. He finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds, shooting four of nine from the three point line. Using the massive size of Oumar Ballo, the Wildcats should continue to be a force not only behind the three point line, but also in the paint. Add Pelle Larson into the picture, and all of a sudden the Wildcats have a great three level scoring offense. There is a big question mark revolving around Arizona though in their bench. With three players logging significant minutes, the Wildcats were only able to muster eight bench points. Dayton is obviously a better team than Long Beach State, so if it comes down to it, it may be hard to rely on Arizona’s bench if need be.
As for Dayton, they needed a huge second half rally to keep their National Title hopes alive. Finding themselves down 17 in the second half, they worked their way back into the game, to come away with an incredible three point victory over Nevada. Overall as a team, the Flyers did not shoot well, making 46% of their shots. What could play into their hands this game though was their ability to get to the free throw line. Making 13 free throws is certainly possible if DaRon Holmes can work the paint and pick up quick fouls on Ballo. Against Nevada, Holmes was five for eight shooting and hit eight of nine free throws. With the lack of production from their guards, it is going to have to be Holmes who carries the Flyers to a victory against Arizona.
In this game, I am expecting Dayton to have a similar game as their first half against Nevada. While Nevada is not a bad team by any means, Arizona is a different animal. The Wildcats can attack you from too many different ways, something that the Flyers have not experienced this season. With Holmes being the Flyers’ best player, he is going to have to work just as hard on defense as on offense in the paint, which leads me to believe that he will get tired and foul early. I love Arizona -9.5 in this game, as Dayton seemingly left it all out there to take down Nevada and will undoubtedly be tired in this game.
