After parting company with Premier Boxing Champions in February, Álvarez collaborated with them to arrange the fight. With two bouts left on a three-fight contract that was signed in June 2023, they called it quits.
After defeating Jermell Charlo by a unanimous decision to keep the undisputed middleweight title on September 30, this will be Álvarez’s first fight since then.
With PBC, the fight between Álvarez and Munguía is regarded as a “one-fight deal”. The fight will be available for pay-per-view on both DAZN, which has an exclusive arrangement with Golden Boy Promotions, and Prime Video, which has an agreement with PBC.
Álvarez has fought 64 times and has a 60-2-2 record. He has won three straight fights since losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 for the WBA light heavyweight crown. Álvarez will be participating on the weekend of Cinco de Mayo for the tenth time in his career and the fourth year in a row. In the nine prior fights, he is 8-1.
Munguía has a 43-0 record and 34 career knockouts. After stopping John Ryder by TKO in the ninth round on January 27 to keep the WBC Silver super middleweight title, this will be his second fight of the year.
