Back again with another dynasty fantasy football Keep-Trade-Cut and today we are going to be evaluating three quarterbacks who get discussed quite often in the dynasty community: Brock Purdy, Jordan Love and Kyler Murray. I tend to lean toward quarterbacks who have big-time physical traits when evaluating their dynasty value. All three of these guys are solid options to lead your dynasty team, and they have all had success in the past. But the goal here is to project what these players will be in the next 3-5 years and what their value is moving forward.
Based on injury history and recent production, we will do a Keep-Trade-Cut for Brock Purdy, Jordan Love and Kyler Murray below, in terms of dynasty fantasy football value.
For clarity, the player we “keep” is the player we would want to keep on our dynasty team. We believe the value they produce for us would be more than what we could get in a trade. On the other side, the “trade” player has value, but the value of the potential returns outweighs the player himself. Finally, the “cut” player is viewed as the least valuable of the bunch for the 2024 dynasty fantasy football offseason.
Dynasty Fantasy Football Keep-Trade-Cut
Keep: Jordan Love, Packers (Age 25)
When I evaluate quarterbacks, I tend to lean toward guys that have big-time physical attributes. From what I saw in the second half of the season from Jordan Love, he has all of the tangible traits of a franchise quarterback. His ability to throw off platform combined with his arm strength gives him the ability to create explosive plays downfield, as I witnessed firsthand in the Wild Card game versus the Cowboys. I believe that Love and Packers’ coach Matt LaFleur will continue to build on the chemistry that we saw them create last season. LaFleur has proven that he can get the most out of quarterbacks after he helped an older Aaron Rodgers win back-to-back league MVPs in 2020 and 2021. Love is a gunslinger who threw 11 INTs last season. I fully expect that he will cut that down to 7-8 after having another offseason to develop under coach LaFleur.
The Packers are loaded with young, talented skill players at both receiver and tight end. When healthy, we have seen what Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson are capable of doing. But what caught me by the most surprise last season was the emergence of rookies Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks. It seems that Love now has four legitimate receiving options that are all on their rookie contracts for the next 2-3 seasons. Packers GM Brian Gutekunst didn’t stop there as the front office drafted what seems like two very serviceable receiving options at tight end in Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft. Love finished with 32 passing touchdowns last season, and I believe it is reasonable for him to throw 35-40 next year. Love is one of my dark horse MVP candidates for next season and someone you want on your dynasty team.
Trade: Kyler Murray, Cardinals (Age 26)
From unfollowing the Arizona Cardinals on social media in 2022 to having a clause in his contract that keeps him from playing video games, Kyler Murray has a history of being involved with off-the-field drama. Despite his off-field issues, Murray has proven that when he is healthy, he is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL. There was a lot of uncertainty with him last season after coming off of a torn ACL. He made his return in Week 10 and didn’t show any signs of regression. I think Murray has one of the more unique skill sets in the league that has a lot of dynasty fantasy football upside. His ability to scramble makes him a threat to score through the air or on the ground which makes fantasy managers happy.
One reason I believe Kyler Murray is trending up is that I think the Cardinals are going to take wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. with the fourth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. I think Harrison is a prospect that can be compared to players like Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Davante Adams, and he will give Murray an immediate impact player to throw the ball to. I think the possible combination of Harrison, Marquise Brown, Trey McBride and James Conner will give the Cardinals one of the best offensive skill groups in the league. McBride finished as the TE7 last season in PPR rankings despite only catching three touchdowns. Expect a huge year from McBride who gives Murray a top weapon at TE.
I fully expect Kyler Murray to have a great statistical season through the air and on the ground. He also has the name value that will still return a pretty penny in a trade for dynasty fantasy football, so he is clearly second in this Keep-Trade-Cut.
Cut: Brock Purdy, 49ers (Age 24)
It seems like every time I turned on a sports talk show this past season, a heated debate was being discussed about Brock Purdy. From Mr. Irrelevant to leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl, it’s no debate that Purdy has been one of the most awesome NFL stories of my lifetime. However, I feel like Brock has physical limitations that will be difficult to overcome in the future. I feel that his arm strength is average and his accuracy was inconsistent when playing against better defenses. I do think he throws with great anticipation that allows him to throw receivers open, but his physical skills are not anywhere close to Love or Murray.
The main reason I have Purdy ranked below the other two is because of his supporting cast. I think he easily had the best supporting cast in the NFL this past season, led by Christian McCaffrey, who had one of the best seasons for an RB we have ever seen. The 49ers’ ability to run the ball with CMC allowed Purdy to have many easy completions to star playmakers in Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Not to mention his first ballot Hall of Fame tackle Trent Wiliams who holds down half of the offensive line. It will be nearly impossible for the 49ers to keep this supporting cast around him, especially with Brandon Aiyuk’s contract dispute and McCaffrey and Kittle getting up there in age. Even though I am a huge fan of Brock Purdy’s story, I just need to see more from him once he signs a big contract extension and won’t be able to have an all-star cast around him.
