Reports recently surfaced that Wichita State basketball will be parting ways with head coach Gregg Marshall. This is coming on the heels of the alleged abuse Marshall had with his players and coaching staff.

Gregg Marshall Abuse Allegations

Former player Shaq Morris, who was a part of the 35-1 Wichita State basketball team in the 2013-14 season, alleged that Marshall punched him twice during a practice in 2015. An anonymous player also stated that the team wanted to “beat Marshall up.” More than players spoke out about Marshall’s abuse. Some staff also mentioned that he would berate them and occasionally use racial slurs. Wichita State basketball has had 10 players transfer from the school since 2018, which is almost double of what the national average is.

After joining the school 13 years ago, Marshall has turned it into a juggernaut in the American Athletic Conference and Missouri Valley Conference. In total, Marshall compiled a 331-121 record at Wichita State. he made the tournament seven times and brought the team to a Final Four.

He also coached the team to the aforementioned perfect regular season and overall 35-1 record in 2013-14. Marshall has created a winning atmosphere around the program, seeing players like Ron Baker, Fred VanVleet and Cleanthony Early make it to the NBA.

Wichita State Basketball Moving On

What does this mean now for Wichita State basketball? There is no doubt the Marshall is a talented basketball coach. If Wichita State can’t find a quality replacement, they may find themselves back at the bottom of the AAC. If Wichita State wants to get back to prominence, they may need to look for a coach immediately.

A candidate for head coach, who can keep a winning culture, is former Ohio State coach Thad Matta. Coach Matta brought Ohio State to two Final Fours, in 2007 and 2012. As stated before, if Wichita State can’t find a quality replacement for Marshall, we may not see the Shockers in the NCAA Tournament for years to come.
