The tight end position is a tough one in Week 9. There are a couple of players at the position who have been must-start players, but they will face must-sit matchups. In many cases, you probably can find someone to play over them who would be better. However, you should not sacrifice your future roster build for one week, unless you absolutely have to.
As you can tell, there are some very tough fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em decisions in Week 9, and I am here to help!
Look, I am not here to tell you that Trey McBride or Brock Bowers are worthy of starts. Hell, we’ll leave that type of analysis to the Fantasy Football Counselor or some other hack. Instead, we will look at the players who potentially may or may not be a TE1, depending on their weekly matchup.
Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out our weekly fantasy football rankings here. Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 9 TEs
Start: Sam LaPorta Fantasy Outlook at Dolphins
A report of Sam LaPorta being disgruntled about his contract came out a couple of weeks ago; then he put up finishes of TE42 and TE25, which were his worst two games of the season. However, there is no hidden agenda to “punish” him for his public comments. Rather, the matchups weren’t great, but the matchup in Week 9 is why he is kicking off our Fantasy Football Start ‘em, Sit ‘em.
The Dolphins have been terrible against the tight end position all season long. They allow the third-most fantasy points to TEs this season, giving up over 20 points per game to the position in four of their past five games. The big reason why that wasn’t the case last week was that Hunter Henry left injured.
LaPorta has an 18% target share for the Lions and 11 red zone targets in seven games. He is in a great position to bounce back for fantasy, and he is a strong bet to score as well.
Start: Harold Fannin Jr. Fantasy Outlook at Saints
It was a tough start to the season for Harold Fannin Jr., who had such a promising rookie season. Head coach Todd Monkin spoke about how involved Fannin would be this season, but in Weeks 1-6, he had four games with three or fewer receptions, and he was not a startable player.
However, Cleveland has made it a point to get him the ball over the past couple of weeks. In Weeks 7-8, Fannin has totaled 16 receptions on 21 targets for 245 yards. He hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 4, but that could change this week against the Saints, especially with Shedeur Sanders in line to start.
The New Orleans Saints defense is not very good overall, and that includes their performance against tight ends. They have allowed the sixth-most fantasy points to TEs per game, and they are allowing 5.8 yards per play overall. Expect Cleveland to move the ball plenty in this game, and it seems like they want Fannin to be a big part of those plans.

Sit: Dalton Kincaid Fantasy Outlook at Vikings
It looked like the Buffalo Bills made it a point to get Dalton Kincaid the ball last week, coming off their bye. He caught four of six targets for 86 yards and a touchdown. However, all signs point to him disappointing in Week 9.
The Minnesota Vikings are as bad a matchup as the tight end position gets, allowing by far the fewest fantasy points in the league. Through seven games, the Vikings have allowed 22 receptions for 273 yards and no touchdowns.
Minnesota’s blitz-heavy scheme really limits what Buffalo is able to do downfield, and Kincaid may be asked to chip before releasing downfield as well. Just sit him this week.
Sit: Oronde Gadsden Fantasy Outlook vs Texans
You may be thinking, “Zach, Justin Herbert’s targets have to go somewhere!” First off, no, they don’t. Secondly, many seem to be going to the other team very willingly.
The Los Angeles Chargers are the worst team in the NFL, and that includes the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts players at least have the incentive to try, since they could lose their jobs or be traded if they impress another team. With the Chargers, the motivation across the board feels rather low, but I digress.
This week, the Chargers play a Texans team that is coming off their bye. Yes, Oronde Gadsden led the team in receptions last week (5), and the Texans also saw that. Look for them to have a plan in place to stop him in the same way they limited Isaiah Likely to 12 yards in their last game, and Likely is a better player than Gadsden.
