FlurrySports ranks the best point guards in Kentucky basketball history, including players all throughout the university’s historic existence.

To state it bluntly, there has been no shortage of incredible basketball players to come through the University of Kentucky. You can’t look at the NBA today without seeing a guard who graduated from the University of Kentucky. Led by two of the greatest coaches in college basketball history, Adolph Rupp and John Calipari, Kentucky basketball has had its fair share of success, totaling the most wins in Division 1 history.

With names like John Wall and Kyle Macy, Kentucky basketball has a claim for the best collection of point guards in college basketball. With that being said, let’s try to narrow that list down to five and talk about the best point guards in Kentucky basketball history.

Best Point Guards in Kentucky Basketball History

5. Dirk Minniefield (1979-83)

8.7 PPG (points per game), 5.3 APG, 2.7 RPG, 52.4% FG

  • 1x Second-Team All-SEC

Kicking off the list is the Kentucky basketball all-time leader in assists. I don’t care who you are or what you accomplished in college; if you lead the Kentucky Wildcats in assists, you deserve a spot on this list. As the high assist total shows, Minniefield was as consistent as they come at the lead guard in college basketball. In his four-year career with the Wildcats, Minniefield never finished a season with fewer than 126 assists. On top of that, he had two seasons with over 180 assists. While he was a capable scorer, Minniefield did most of his damage on the court, setting his teammates up for success.

Owning the record for most career assists at Kentucky seems like it warrants a high spot on this list, but his lack of success in the NCAA Tournament hurt his overall ranking. Even with some of the top-ranked teams in the country, Minniefield was not able to get over the hump, as his Wildcats were upset several times before finally losing in the regional finals to Louisville in his last season in college. While the tournament success was not there, Minniefield’s control of the offense and control of the ball is more than enough to make the list.

4. Kyle Macy (1977-80)

14.5 PPG, 4.8 APG, 2.5 RPG, 52.1% FG

  • 1978 NCAA Champion
  • 1x Consensus All-American
  • 1980 SEC Player of the Year
  • 3x First-Team All-SEC

Right before Dirk Minnifield staked his name in the record book at Kentucky, Kyle Macy was running the show for the Wildcats. Originally starting his college career at Purdue, Macy was forced to take a year off before transferring to Kentucky before his second season. After getting to Kentucky, Macy was a staple of dominance for the Wildcats, scoring 1,411 points in three seasons and racking up a number of assists as well. Playing before the introduction of the three-point line, Macy could hit shots all over the court.

During his tenure in Lexington, Macy put together two of the greatest seasons in Kentucky basketball history. The first came in his first season with the Wildcats. Macy was a major driving force behind the Wildcats winning the 1978 National Championship. During that season, Macy put together a 13 PPG, 5.7 APG performance. His skill at the point guard position helped the Wildcats finish with a 30-2 record. The second season came in his senior campaign. In 1979-80, Macy was named SEC Player of the Year, where he averaged 15.4 PPG and 4.7 APG. Becoming the first Kentucky basketball player to be named SEC Player of the Year is more than enough to make this list.

3. Tyler Ulis (2014-16)

11.3 PPG, 5.3 APG, 2.4 RPG, 42.7% FG, 37.1% 3PT

  • 1x Consensus First-Team All-American
  • 2016 Bob Cousy Award
  • 2016 SEC Player of the Year
  • 2016 SEC Defensive Player of the Year
  • 1x First-Team All-SEC

Standing at just 5-10, 160 lbs, Tyler Ulis certainly played above his small size during his tenure under John Calipari. While Kentucky has seen its fair share of point guards dominate in the NBA, Ulis is a rare case of a Wildcat point guard being a better college player. While he did play in 37 games as a freshman, Ulis’ sophomore season is what he is always going to be remembered for. During this season in 2015-16, Ulis totaled 246 assists, a number that still stands as the Kentucky record in a single season ten years later.

That is only the tip of the iceberg for Ulis’ sophomore campaign, though. Being named the Bob Cousy Award winner, the SEC Player of the Year and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year is quite the accomplishment for any player, but taking into account his small frame, it becomes even more unbelievable. Scoring 17.3 PPG, on top of 1.5 steals per game, Ulis partnered with Jamal Murray to lead the Wildcats to an SEC title, before bowing out of the NCAA Tournament to Indiana in the Round of 32. Playing a reserve role in the famous Kentucky team that went 38-1, the only thing missing on Ulis’ resume is a National Championship.

2. Ralph Beard (1945-49)

10.7 PPG, 31.7%. FG

  • 2x NCAA Champion (1948, 1949)
  • 3x Consensus All-American
  • 1x All-SEC Team

The oldest player on our list, Ralph Beard, certainly has a case to be the best point guard in Kentucky basketball history. His numbers don’t jump off the page. Standing at 5-10, 175 lbs, his size doesn’t jump off the page either. But his impact on UK basketball as a whole is immeasurable. Most noted for his time with Rupp’s fabulous five, Beard was an instrumental part in bringing the Wildcats their first two championships in school history. He was also a part of the 1948 gold medal-winning basketball squad. Almost 80 years later, Beard’s 1,517 points rank him in the university’s top 25 of all time.

While the championships and All-American selections jump off the page when you look back at Beard, he will likely be remembered for what happened off the court. Beard, along with teammates, was charged in the infamous 1951 college basketball points shaving scandal. While it eventually came out that Beard had accepted $700, he has denied intentionally shaving points. Either way, Ralph Beard received a lifetime ban from the NBA, ending his basketball career. Even with the scandal, you cannot overstate how much Beard means to the University of Kentucky, as proven by his two National Championships.

1. John Wall (2009-10)

16.6 PPG, 6.5 APG, 3.5 RPG, 46.1% FG, 32.5% 3PT

  • 1x Consensus First-Team All-American
  • 2010 SEC Player of the Year

When we boil down all of the point guards to ever play at Kentucky, John Wall‘s career does not stack up to some of the others mentioned on the list, but there is no doubt that during their time playing for Kentucky, he was the best point guard in the school’s history. Wall took the world by storm when his high school mixtape came out, prompting many to label him as the next face of the NBA. Before the NBA, Wall became the face of Calipari’s one-and-done legacy at Kentucky. In the 2009-10 season, there was no player who was more explosive or game-changing than Wall.

During Kentucky’s march to an SEC regular season title and SEC Tournament Championship, Wall led the Wildcats in points, assists and steals. At 16.6 PPG. 6.5 APG and 1.8 SPG, Wall was a shoo-in to be the number one overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. That much was true and Wall became Kentucky’s first player to ever be selected number one in the NBA draft. When playing with the Wildcats, it looked like Wall was playing against high schoolers, as there truly was not a better player in the game. A part of Calipari’s first recruiting class, Wall was able to bring Kentucky basketball back to relevance.
