Congratulations to both Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. They fell short of being awarded the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, but to have two players of their caliber speaks volumes about this team. There are some who may critique Simmons for only scoring four points in Game 2 of this series. To those critics, I say who cares? Simmons’ job is not to score on this team. His job is to stop/slow down the opponent’s best player and cause matchup problems with his defensive prowess. And when Embiid can step in for 40 points, why should Simmons try to get in the way?
For the Hawks, Game 2 was never a game they needed to win. Would a win have been nice? Heck yes. But because they stole Game 1, this team did not need to scrape and claw in Game 2. Trae Young will get back to his normal self at home. It would be shocking if he went 1-7 from three-point range in State Farm Arena. John Collins also needs to step up in order to make sure Embiid doesn’t slap another 40-point performance on the box score.
