With the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the 49ers draft Trey Lance, quarterback out of North Dakota State. Trey Lance was truly the question mark among quarterbacks in this draft. Not only did he only play a single game this past season, but it was against a weak opponent and he still struggled. Questions have been raised about him as an accurate passer, but his legs were likely what put him over the top of other QB’s such as Mac Jones.

What to Expect From Trey Lance in 2021
The jury is still out on what can come of this pick. It seems like the 49ers are in a corner that makes them keep Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter. However, they do have an out after this season with his contract situation. The 49ers will likely keep Lance on the bench to learn the offense and get up to speed this year. Garoppolo was a game manager at best and his flaws were shown in Super Bowl 54.
With Lance, it’s a good decision, should San Francisco go with it, to bench him for a year. His arm strength and legs are of another world. His accuracy however leaves much to be desired and it would be a nice thing to have a year to fine tune. While he won’t see the field this year most likely, he is a two way offensive weapon that really helps this offense become less one dimensional and hopefully, good enough for another deep playoff run.
