3 Players the Celtics Should Use the TPE On

In November 2020, the Boston Celtics traded Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets. In exchange, the Celtics received the largest TPE ever —$27 million. But what is a “TPE” and how can it help Boston make the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010?

What is TPE?

TPE stands for Traded Player Exception. It allows the Celtics to absorb up to $27 million worth of contracts without needing to match player salaries in the trade. In essence, it is one of the greatest assets Danny Ainge has ever had as a General Manager. Ainge can acquire any player who makes $27 million or less without needing to trade a top-player on his own team.

As they are constructed right now, the Celtics have two bonafide All-Stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Kemba Walker has left much to be desired, as his return to form has taken longer than fans wanted.

If the Celtics intend to make a title run and create a roster that can contend with the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, they need to use the TPE. Here are three players the Boston Celtics should trade for.

Players the Celtics Should Use the TPE On

Larry Nance Jr.

The Celtics already have former Cleveland Cavalier Tristan Thompson on their roster. Why not add another high energy Cav? Larry Nance Jr. provides size and the ability to guard multiple positions. The Celtics have struggled defensively, and Nance could really help on that side of the ball. Plus, he is athletic, can run the floor and is a good rebounder. Perhaps the best part of acquiring Nance is his age and contract. Nance is just 27 years old and has three years left on his deal. He is also earning just $11.7 million, meaning the Celtics could target another player making $15.3 million or less.

Terrence Ross

Terrence Ross has proven he can be a solid option off the bench for a championship contender. Ross has averaging 1.2 steals per game and is a capable defender to step in and mitigate the loss of Marcus Smart, who will miss 2-3 weeks with a Grade 1 calf strain. At 8-13, the Orlando Magic are hanging on by a thread in the Eastern Conference. That was before Aaron Gordon got hurt.

It may be time for the Magic to trade some of their current pieces to try to rebuild for next year. At 29 with three years on his contract, Ross would be a valuable asset off the bench for the Celtics. His contract of $13.5 million also gives Boston flexibility to pursue another option.

Harrison Barnes

Harrison Barnes is only 28 years old, but he would provide the Celtics championship experience. Barnes is also having one of his best shooting seasons of his career, with 50/40/85. He may have the most expensive contract on this list ($22 million) but he also has three years on his contract. Harrison Barnes would provide Brad Stevens another solid wing defender who could match up on multiple players and provide great offense within the right system.

Who Would the Celtics Trade?

The Celtics do not have as many assets as past years, but they can provide decent talent for cheap in the event of a trade. For example, Grant Williams ($2.4 million), Romeo Langford ($3.6 million), Javonte Green ($1.5 million) and Carson Edwards ($1.5 million) could all be packaged with a second-round draft pick or two.

Who do you think the Boston Celtics will trade for?
