The Detroit Lions have won the hearts of America, and there is no doubt that most football fans will be rooting for them in the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers. Despite having one of the best offenses in the league over the past two seasons, it still feels like Detroit is a fish out of water here. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a chance to make some noise. And helping to fortify an already terrific group is Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz.

After signing with the Detroit Lions on Monday, Zach Ertz has a busy week learning the offense and solidifying his role ahead of the NFC Championship on Sunday. Of course, he could help with the game-planning against a team he is familiar with as well.

Zach Ertz Signs With Detroit Lions Ahead of NFC Championship

Zach Ertz began the season with the Arizona Cardinals. The veteran spent his past two-plus seasons in Arizona. He started the season off strong, but injuries led to Ertz missing a lot of time. This also gave Trey McBride the opportunity to flourish in an expanded role, making Ertz expendable once he became healthy. He also wished to compete with a contender, so the Cardinals let him go.

He waited for the perfect opportunity, and Ertz has found it. Zach Ertz joins a Detroit Lions offense that is already terrific. Ertz also gets the opportunity to put together two strong performances at San Francisco this season.

Back in October, Ertz turned 10 targets into 53 against the 49ers. Obviously, playing in the NFC West with the Cardinals, Ertz is familiar with the 49ers, as this was the team to beat in the division. He brings this perspective, and hours of film study, the the Detroit Lions ahead of one of the biggest games in the franchise’s history.

No, Ertz won’t be an every-down player for Detroit on Sunday. He will be used in specific packages. Still, there is no doubt that the Pro-Bowler improves this offense on the field. However, it’s his presence leading up to the game that will be much more valuable.
