Jaden Ivey Draft Profile
Strengths
When it comes to offensive talent in the 2022 NBA Draft class, few prospects can stack up with Jaden Ivey. He is hands-down the best scoring guard in this year’s class. Ivey thrives in pick-and-roll and isolation sets thanks to an extremely quick first step. He already has a full arsenal of mid-range shots and can also knock down three-pointers. While there may be room for his outside shooting percentages to improve, it’s hard to nitpick much of anything regarding Ivey’s ability to finish at the rim. He takes long, graceful strides. There is truly a sense of calmness to his dribble-drive maneuvers. Ivey is also a skilled passer. His ability to penetrate a defense often sets up kick-out opportunities. Meanwhile, his instinctive feel when operating in pick and roll will translate extremely well to the NBA level.
Weaknesses
For Ivey to truly blossom as an NBA player, he will need to get a whole lot better on the defensive end. Whether it was fatigue or apathy is unknown, but Ivey constantly would lose his man on defense. One could argue that he was more of a liability than a positive for Purdue at that end of the floor. Ivey will also need to continue improving his three-point shot. He managed to achieve a ten-percentage point improvement from beyond the arc from his freshman to sophomore seasons at Purdue. However, he remains a streaky shooter and will need to become even more consistent in the pro ranks.
