Black Monday in the NFL turned into a week full of firings, capped off with the Houston Texans firing David Culley today after just one year in charge. This is a controversial firing to most and should be seen as an unfair firing to all. However, the business of the NFL always wins. As I stated on the FlurrySports Podcast, this firing would only occur if they knew the person they wanted to replace him with. Almost immediately after the firing news broke, more Texans news came out that they would be targeting Brian Flores to become the new head coach.
Dolphins Fire Brian Flores
The David Culley firing was controversial, and the Brian Flores firing earlier in the week was just as polarizing. Flores appeared to turn around the Miami Dolphins franchise and make them a team opponents would need to respect.
However, there are reports of things said and done behind the scenes. Regardless of what is true or false, right or wrong, Brian Flores is a highly-coveted head coaching candidate around the NFL right now.
Houston Texans Targeting Brian Flores as New Head Coach
Now, the Texans have their eyes set on Flores. Initial reports are that Flores is the prime candidate because of his past experience with current Texans general manager Nick Caserio, who was with Flores in New England.
This can absolutely be true. However, there can be more than one reason to bring him in.
Why the Texans Are Targeting Brian Flores
So yes, he has a past relationship with Caserio. We can assume it was a positive one. A positive general manager-head coach relationship is important in the NFL.
Another reason to bring him in is his proven ability to turn around a program. In three years with Flores, the Dolphins went 5-11, 10-6 and 9-8. The Texans need someone to build up their franchise in a similar way. They also need a coach players want to play for.
The biggest player included in that is Deshaun Watson. Clearly, Watson has been vocal about wanted to be traded out. His ideal landing spot was in Miami, and Brian Flores was a big part of his reasoning. Now, if Flores landed in Houston, the Texans may be able to retain one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Not only that, but Davis Mills looked solid this past season. It’s possible they could gain some draft assets in a trade for him to help build around Watson for the future.
It will be interesting to see where Brian Flores lands, since it appears every team with a vacancy would love to sign him.
