We’re less than a week away from the 2022 NFL season, but there are still some unanswered questions for fantasy football managers. One of the more popular questions has to do with the tight end position. There is a clear top three at the position, but what do you do after that? In this fantasy football ADP battle, we’re looking at two top TEs and determining if you should draft George Kittle or Darren Waller for fantasy football.
George Kittle vs Darren Waller Fantasy Football ADP Value Battle
Note: All ADPs and ranks reflect a 12-team, PPR draft format
George Kittle Fantasy ADP: 4.08
ADP Position Rank: 4
Overall Rank: 45
The 2021 season was full of ups and downs for George Kittle. He started the season, as expected, putting up some double-digit points in PPR leagues. Then, after Week 4, he was placed on short-term IR with a calf injury, causing him to miss four games. He came back stronger than ever, as he scored six touchdowns and four 90+ yard games in a seven-week span. The downs came back, as after Week 16 (including playoffs) he never passed 75 yards.
This season will already be different for him, as he will have a new starting QB in Trey Lance. We have a very small sample size of how the Lance and Kittle connection will work, as they played in two games together last year. George Kittle totaled five receptions on 13 targets for 69 yards and no scores. That was backup rookie QB Trey Lance. They’ve now gone through training camp and it sounds like George Kittle will be ready to prove that he is once again a top-three TE.

Darren Waller Fantasy ADP: 5.02
ADP Position Rank: 5
Overall Rank: 52
Darren Waller started off his 2021 season with a bang, going for a 10-105-1 game in Week 1. He continued this dominance by scoring 10+ PPR points in each of the three following weeks. Then, after his bye, he went touchdown-less and only played five more games after suffering a knee injury in Week 12, ending his two-year streak of having 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
The Raiders made a big splash in the offseason by acquiring former Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams in a trade. That trade will likely hurt Waller target-wise, but it should be easier for Waller to get open, as the attention will be on Adams. While the trade made the offensive weapons get better, they did not solve their offensive line problems, and Derek Carr could be sacked more.
Should I Draft George Kittle or Darren Waller for Fantasy Football?
With both tight ends having an injury-shortened season, they are ready to bounce back and prove their worth. The ADPs are less than 10 spots away from each other, making this battle that much closer. There was one factor that determined the winner of this fantasy football ADP battle — targets.
With that factor, the George Kittle fantasy football value is higher. We know where he is in the pecking order of the 49ers’ receiving corps. The trade just hurt too much of Darren Waller’s value, as we don’t know if he is behind or ahead of Hunter Renfrow with the Adams trade. However, Waller would be a great second option if George Kittle is taken too high.
