The quarterback position for the Minnesota Vikings has been discussed heavily over the past several months, for many different reasons. First, they decided to move on from Kirk Cousins in order to draft JJ McCarthy. After the rookie suffered a season-ending injury, the focus has shifted to Sam Darnold as the starter. All three players are seemingly the same human if you squint hard enough, but Darnold somehow has managed to play the best football of his career.

Again, the Vikings quarterback conversation has been a complete roller coaster, but they have been riding the high of Darnold through the first several weeks of the season. But after Minnesota’s first loss, is it all doom and gloom for the Vikings now? Recently, it was reported that the Vikings have been linked to Matthew Stafford. Could the Vikings actually make a Sam Darnold trade?

NFL Rumors: Vikings May Trade Sam Darnold For Matthew Stafford

When we say Sam Darnold is playing the best football of his career, obviously that is a low bar to clear. However, Darnold is playing very well by all accounts, passing for 1,370 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. Most importantly, he has led Minnesota to a 5-1 record. Why would the Vikings move on from Darnold?

Well, Matthew Stafford is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL, and nobody would know that better than Kevin O’Connell, Stafford’s offensive coordinator when they won a Super Bowl. Nobody knows more about these two passers, and how they could lead this football team, than him. So, if Minnesota did make a Sam Darnold trade, this is important to keep in mind.

Still, it would be an odd move. If the Los Angeles Rams were to lose on Thursday Night Football this week, it does appear they would be willing to trade both Stafford and Cooper Kupp in order to start their rebuild.

However, there is one interesting issue here. If the Rams lose on Thursday, then that means the Vikings would win. If Sam Darnold leads the Vikings to victory, then you trade him for the quarterback he just won against, that is bad football karma. The Minnesota Vikings have never had the Football Gods on their side, and a move like this feels like the ultimate curse would be put on this franchise.
