Los Angeles Chargers Preview
The Chargers failed to get back to their winning ways following a Week 7 bye, losing as home favorites last Sunday to the New England Patriots. For the second straight game, Justin Herbert and the highly-regarded L.A. offense were held in check. The Patriots flustered Herbert into throwing two interceptions while dominating both time of possession and total plays run. Austin Ekeler finished with over 120 total yards and a rushing score, but few other playmakers were able to produce consistently for the Chargers.
Fortunately, Los Angeles should have an easier go of it offensively in this Week 9 NFL betting matchup. The Eagles’ defense is nowhere near as talented as the last two the Chargers have gone up against. At the same time, Brandon Staley has a big concern facing his own defense this week. While the Chargers are a top-five adjusted defense against the pass, they rank dead last at defending the run in the same metric. This could be a massive problem against a run-heavy Philadelphia team. The Patriots successfully gouged the Chargers on the ground last week. Adjustments will be critical to ensuring that does not happen again on Sunday.
Philadelphia Eagles Preview
Speaking of that run-heavy Eagles’ offense, Philadelphia routed the winless Detroit Lions last week despite quarterback Jalen Hurts only attempting 14 passes. With lead running back Miles Sanders landing on IR, the Eagles turned to both Boston Scott and Jordan Howard last week. The backfield tandem combined for nearly 120 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns. Of The dual-threat Hurts also added 71 yards rushing. Meanwhile, six of his nine completions went to tight end Dallas Goedert. Passing has been a struggle for this offense all season, but it may not matter against the porous Chargers’ run D.
Despite a rush of public NFL betting tickets on the Lions as a short home dog last week, the Eagles took control right away. The outcome of the game was never in doubt. Philly’s defense made sure of this, as they dominated the line of scrimmage and finished with six total sacks. Achieving a similar pass rush against the Chargers will be easier said than done. However, it could prove vital to the Eagles’ chances of covering the spread. Outside of Darius Slay, the Eagles’ secondary is extremely thin on talent. They could struggle to hold up against the dynamic WR duo of Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.
