The 2022 Big Ten Tournament is set to get underway Wednesday, March 9th. Last year’s Big Ten basketball tournament saw Illinois secure their third conference tournament championship with a 91-88 win over Ohio State in overtime.

With multiple teams in the Big Ten are sitting firmly in the tournament picture, the tournament can have major implications in terms of seeding for the NCAA Tournament. Wisconsin and Illinois will look to defend their regular season co-title while Iowa and Purdue look to make up for their underwhelming conference finishes. Big Ten Conference Breakdown

This year, the Big Ten will hope to see continued “madness” in their conference tournament In the 2021 Big Ten tournament, #5 Ohio State made it to the championship before losing to #2 Illinois. The top four seeds of Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Rutgers get a double bye and will only need to win two games to win the title. Illinois will look to defend their crown and win their third conference title. Wisconsin will look to defend their regular season co-title and win their fourth Big Ten tournament championship.

Of the 14 total teams in the Big Ten Conference, Purdue, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Ohio State all finished the regular season with a top-25 ranking in the College Basketball Net. Purdue enters the Big Ten tournament with a No. 13 overall net ranking. Illinois enters the Big Ten tournament with a No. 14 overall net ranking. Iowa enters the Big Ten tournament with a No. 15 overall net ranking. Wisconsin enters the Big Ten tournament with a No. 20 overall net ranking. Ohio State enters the Big Ten tournament with a No. 21 overall net ranking.

The Big Ten basketball preseason poll did a pretty bad job predicting the outcome of the conference. Michigan received 13 of 28 first-place votes and ended up finishing in eighth. Wisconsin was slated to finish 10th and ended up being overachievers as they split the regular season title with Illinois. Maryland was quite the underachiever as they were predicted to finish fifth but ended up in 10th.
