The Vegas Golden Knights are following a script unlike any in the history of expansion franchises in the major sports. The NHL’s newest franchise and the first major sports team ever to call Las Vegas home is, in the way its city does, doing things big. Really big. Historically big, in fact. The team’s 7-1 start to the season is unprecedented among expansion franchises in the major sports. Compare it to some of these numbers: Nashville Predators (1998, NHL) – The Preds now are a year-in, year-out, contender. But in their first season, they managed just a 1-6-1 mark in…

Mason Rudolph continues to pile up the big games, as his Oklahoma State squad remains in the race for a Big 12 title and possible national playoff appearance. And as the results keep coming, it seems to lead to more and more schools of thought about just how good the Cowboys’ quarterback is? A recent CBS Sports mock draft had Rudolph in the top five, only behind one other quarterback, UCLA’s Josh Rosen. Still, other experts think Rudolph fits into that category of being a nice college quarterback but a poor pro prospect. They point out concerns with his mechanics,…

In 2017, remarkably, the 45-year-old Jagr is still playing in the league, now as a member of the Calgary Flames. Perspective: The average age of an NHL player is 27.5. Or look at it this way: 42 percent of the players on NHL opening day rosters were not even born when Jagr began his NHL career. “I care a lot so I just want to play the best I can play,” Jagr said before his first game earlier this week. “It might be different but I always want to perform on a high level. But it’s not about me, it’s…

Today, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request by the National Football League to overturn an injunction that blocked Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension. The result means Elliott’s suspension is likely to begin after the Cowboys’ bye week and would keep Elliott sidelined through the team’s Thanksgiving Day game against the San Diego Chargers. Elliott was initially suspended over allegations of domestic violence stemming from past incidents in the state of Ohio. Elliott had been granted an injunction days before the season started to delay the suspension but today’s ruling has overturned that. Elliott’s lawyers now could file…

Just two teams have made it to the second Saturday of October undefeated in Big 12 play. Of course, those two are Texas and TCU, just like everyone expected. Here’s a look at what’s coming up this week. Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1) vs. Texas (3-2, 2-0), at the Cotton Bowl Everyone thought Oklahoma would cruise as a 30-point favorite, playing on its home field a week ago against Iowa State. Now, the Sooners come into their biggest rivalry game sporting perhaps college football’s best win this season (at Ohio State) and its worst loss (last week to the aforementioned Cyclones).…

It’s time to see who wants to step forward and challenge Oklahoma in the Big 12 race. Coming into the year, many thought Oklahoma State was that team, but Gary Patterson and a TCU team we told you before the season to watch for came into Stillwater two weeks ago and came out with a 44-31 victory. This week, the Horned Frogs host West Virginia in one of two matchups featuring teams that have started league play 1-0. Here’s a look at this weekend’s games. West Virginia (3-1, 1-0) at TCU (4-0, 1-0) Everyone knows about Baker Mayfield at OU…

So now it’s down to this. Thirty men competing for a truckload of money. A $10 million annuity to be exact, courtesy of major tour sponsor FedEx. That’s almost enough to buy one of those jumbo jets the company flies all over the world. It’s surely enough to change a life, and definitely beyond just the money, the FedEx Cup Championship that goes along with it puts any player in a special category in golf. The History The FedEx Cup playoffs started a decade ago as a way for golf to try to add some relevancy at the end of…

With the non-conference season wrapped up, it’s time to look at how the Big 12 has fared early in the college football season. And the report, for the most part, is pretty positive. Oklahoma scored a decisive win at Ohio State. Oklahoma State’s offense is scoring in bunches, and TCU went into SEC country to take down Arkansas by three touchdowns. Plus, Texas had as good of a loss as a team could ever have, taking powerful USC to double overtime before a road loss last week, perhaps signaling that Tom Herman has the Longhorns ready to roll. We took…

Texas football has been to a dark place, and the Longhorns may not yet be out of the worst of it. This weekend is a big early step in the trek for new coach Tom Herman, as the Horns head west to face one of the nation’s elite in USC. It may be too dramatic to call this a turning point in program history. But it’s a game that could shape a lot of what happens moving forward. Herman coached and won big games in his time at Houston. But he’s never faced an atmosphere quite like this as a…

Baker Mayfield feels the responsibility. It still pains him to think about what happened. Last September, Ohio State came to Norman, Oklahoma, and did what few teams have done to the college football powerhouse that resides there. Dominate. The 45-24 final score may not have even been indicative of how thoroughly Urban Meyer’s squad controlled the early-season matchup. “We let down our fans, our coaches and everyone who supports our program,” Mayfield said. “And a lot of that was on me.” In fairness, OU was outplayed across the board. But football is a sport that gives more pressure and more…
