Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 3 RBs Include Jordan Mason

Week 3 fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em RB analysis from FlurrySports includes the likes of Minnesota Vikings’ RB Jordan Mason.

Following a poor first week of action for offenses, last week saw several teams put up a lot of points or play a ton of snaps. As we head into Week 3, offenses across the league are changing yet again due to several starting quarterbacks being out injured. In theory, this could lead to running backs getting more work. However, if those offenses aren’t good enough to stay on the field, that’s a huge negative.

As you can see, there are many questions when creating your starting lineup this week. Luckily, that’s where we come in with this Week 2 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em article!

No, you will not be hearing about Saquon Barkley or Ashton Jeanty. Yes, start them. I won’t be one of those fake fantasy analysts who have the “bold” take that De’Vone Achane could be an RB1 this week. Really? No shit.

Now, labeling a player as a “sit” does not mean they are a must-sit player. As always, check out my weekly fantasy football rankings here. You can also become a member to join a group chat with me and other members where all fantasy football start ’em, sit ’em questions are welcomed!

Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em: Week 3 RBs

Start: Jordan Mason Fantasy Outlook vs Bengals

FantasyPros’ Expert Consensus Ranking (ECR) Rank: 12

Zach Brunner’s Week 3 Fantasy Football Rankings

The time is now. The Minnesota Vikings’ offense has not been good under JJ McCarthy so far this season, but Jordan Mason has been a bright spot in a split backfield. Well, guess what? McCarthy is out, and Mason is no longer splitting snaps with Aaron Jones (injured).

This week, the Vikings are led by Carson Wentz against Jake Browning and the Cincinnati Bengals. Boy, this is not what the NFL hoped for when making this Week 3 matchup. Say whatever you want about Wentz, but he will be better than what McCarthy has been so far. If the Vikings can move the ball a bit more, then that means the team will be in scoring position more often, increasing Jordan Mason’s touchdown opportunity.

Mason has averaged over four yards per carry this season, and he has caught three passes as well. Especially if the Vikings’ defense can force a couple of turnovers against Browning, Mason can push for 20 carries and a couple of receptions in this game. If this is the case, double-digit fantasy points feel like a lock, while a big day could be ahead if he finds pay dirt. Jordan Mason is an obvious “start” in the Week 3 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em.

Start: Jaylen Warren Fantasy Outlook at Patriots

ECR Ranks: 23

The Pittsburgh Steelers look to bounce back from an embarrassing loss by taking on the New England Patriots. Initially, this looks like a bad matchup for Jaylen Warren, since the Patriots have surrendered just 84 rushing yards on 34 carries to RBs this season. However, Aaron Rodgers spoke about Warren earlier this week: “He brings a lot to the table. We might have to keep giving him more opportunities in the pass game, because every time he touches it, something good happens.” Mike Tomlin also said Warren could handle more work.

While the Patriots’ run defense has been stout, their passing defense has been the opposite. To RBs in particular, New England has already allowed 13 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Warren should see more work, especially in the passing game, attacking the Patriots’ weakness through two weeks.

Sit: Nick Chubb Fantasy Outlook at Jaguars

ECR Rank: 29

It was awesome to see Nick Chubb break loose on Monday Night Football to find the end zone for the first time this season? There is one tiny issue, however. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers parted the Red Sea to let him do it (a strategy that led to the win). So, taking away that 25-yard touchdown run, Chubb has just 78 rushing yards on 24 carries this season. With this context, of course, you don’t feel good about starting Nick Chubb in fantasy football Week 3.

The matchup is surprisingly poor as well. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense isn’t outstanding, but they have allowed just 120 rushing yards to RBs this season (3.3 yards per carry). The Texans should be able to move the ball some, so Chubb does have a chance to earn a real touchdown. However, without the six points from a score, I fear he could tank your lineup.

Sit: Jacory Croskey-Merritt Fantasy Outlook vs Raiders

ECR Rank: 27

Hopefully, you haven’t been starting rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt already, so you should have a better option. However, JCM lands on the bottom section of the Week 3 Fantasy Football Start ’em, Sit ’em due to the way others are speaking about him.

Yes, Austin Ekeler tore his Achilles tendon, opening up a massive opportunity for the rookie to become the early-down running back. This is great, and his value should rise given this increase in role. However, that is a guess while we know two things heading into NFL Week 3. First, Croskey-Merritt has not done enough to impress the staff, or us, in the regular season where he would he is guaranteed over half of the snaps. And even if he does get those snaps and touches, do we know he will play well with them? The other thing we know is that this Raiders defense is tough, allowing a total of 82 rushing yards to RBs this season.

For now, sit Jacory Croskey-Merritt. If he impresses this week, feel free to start him going forward. But he is a rookie, questionable in pass protection, and may not be a great fantasy player in a good matchup. This isn’t even a good matchup.
