The Big East may have made its claim as the most fun conference in college basketball this season. With teams like Villanova, Marquette, Providence and UConn in the top 25 for most of the year, the Big East just may be the best conference in college basketball. Villanova advances to NCAA Tournament
Big East Basketball Breakdown
The Georgetown Hoyas went on a magical run last year to win the Big East tournament last year, only to get creamed in the NCAA Tournament. If I was a betting man, I would not bet on that to happen, as Georgetown has not won a conference game this year. Even though Providence took home the one seed, the team to beat in this conference is Villanova. The Wildcats feature a team loaded with experience, including seven out of their eight rotation guys being upperclassmen. Collin Gillespie leads the team with 16.3 points per game. While the Wildcats only score 73.8 points per game, they lead the country in free throw percentage and are 48th in three-point percentage.
Providence was the big story in the Big East this season. The Friars won their first regular season conference title behind a 14-3 conference record. This is not one of those teams that had a lucky run or anything like that. This Friars’ team is a combination of everything that Ed Cooley has shown as a coach from his time at Providence. The team is led by six seniors and one junior. The Friars make their money on the defensive side of the ball, only allowing a 41% field goal percentage to opponents.
In relation to the preseason poll, the biggest overachiever was in fact Providence, who was projected to finish seventh. The biggest underachiever was Saint John’s, who was projected to finish fourth but finished eighth.
