    Atlantic 10 Conference Breakdown

The 2020 Atlantic 10 basketball tournament was canceled prior to its completion. Saint Louis won the most recent tournament to be completed two years ago. History doesn’t exactly favor the Billikens chances to win consecutive A10 championships. No Atlantic 10 team has won back-to-back tournaments since Temple won three straight from 2008-10. Saint Louis joins St. Joseph’s as being the only teams with multiple tournament titles in the last nine seasons. Richmond, St. Bonaventure, VCU, Rhode Island and Davidson have also all won once during that span.

Top seed St. Bonaventure also comes into the Atlantic 10 basketball tournament with the highest net ranking (32) of the 14 teams. The Bonnies are joined by VCU (36) and Saint Louis (42) in the top-50 of the net. Defense has been the catalyst to St. Bonaventure’s impressive season. The Bonnies surrender just 60.6 points per game, the best in the Atlantic 10 and nearly three points better than runner-up Davidson. UMass has been the top scoring team in the A10 this season, averaging 77.1 points per game. When it comes to the average scoring margin, Saint Louis leads the conference at +11.7.

Richmond and Saint Louis were considered the two favorites entering this season in the conference. Surprisingly, neither team lived up to expectations in the regular season. Richmond was the biggest underachiever in Atlantic 10 basketball this year. The Spiders were picked to win the league in the preseason poll and enter the conference tournament as the 8-seed. Meanwhile, VCU was the team to greatest overachiever relative to expectations. The Rams are the 2-seed in the A10 Tournament after being picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll.
