Cleveland Cavaliers Fire Tyronn Lue

There’s never a dull moment in the NBA, as the early morning news breaks that the Cavs will be moving on from Tyronn Lue after a 0-6 start to their season. Lue, who was promoted to Head Coach after the firing of David Blatt in 2016, was 128-83 with the Cavaliers, has been to three NBA Finals and was a champion in that 2016 season. With Ty Lue gone, Larry Drew will serve as the interim coach for the foreseeable future.

Reasoning Behind the Firing

Lue was said to be a player’s coach and was extremely respectful and partial to veterans on his team. This seems to be one of the key factors that led to his firing. The front office wanted to go young with Collin Sexton, Sam Dekker and others, but Lue has been consistent with keeping the vets in the starting role. Most of the players have been reported to be ‘pissed’ with the decision to let Tyronn Lue go. The departure of LeBron James is definitely taking a toll on Lue and the Cavs, as everyone predicted. So where do the Cavs go from here?

What Now for Cleveland?

The answer may seem pretty simple, but what they will actually do is not. The answer is so clear, the Cavs need to have a FULL REBUILD. None of this half-ass, we lose LeBron, but let’s resign and keep Kevin Love-type management. The Cavaliers need to trade Love while he still has most of his health, even though he has been slightly hurt already this season, and can contribute on any team. The same goes for Kyle Korver, who would be lethal on a team in need of shooting.

It’s time to see what kind of players you have and give them some experience. Collin Sexton, Cedi Osman, Sam Dekker, Ante Zizic, Larry Nance Jr. and others need to show their worth. That young core isn’t one of the best in the league, but perhaps it’s a building block.

When it comes to the Head Coach, it seems a bit harsh to pull the trigger this early on Ty Lue losing the best player in the world. Also, if the team is 0-6, who cares? The worse the better, in my opinion. The Cavs need high draft picks and 0-6 is a terrific start! As much as I felt like this decision was early and harsh, the Cavs need to play the young corps and Lue not doing that validates the firing.

For now, keep Larry Drew as the coach for the season. Wait until the market opens up again this summer and go from there. If Larry Drew does great, then I guess good for them? Great probably only means winning about 30 games with this roster. If Drew does bad, then the team gets a high draft pick and you can hire someone new. This team should not look to compete now or for the next few years, but playing the young pieces they have now is vital to their successes down the road.
