World Junior Hockey Championship Preview

The United States, which defeated Canada 2-0 in the championship game in 2021, seeks to win back-to-back titles for the first time. The last team to do so was Canada, which won the last of five straight in 2009.

To date, the U.S. National Junior Team has claimed 13 medals, including five gold (2021, 2017, 2013, 2010, 2004), two silver (2019, 1997) and six bronze medals (2018, 2016, 2011, 2007, 1992, 1986).

2022 World Junior Hockey Championship Point System

  • 3 points for the winning team at the conclusion of regulation time
  • 1 point for both teams at the conclusion of regulation time if the game is tied
  • An additional point earned for the team winning the game in a 5-minute overtime period, or the Penalty-Shot Shootout if the teams are still tied following conclusion of the overtime period
  • 0 points for the team losing the game in regulation time

World Junior Hockey Championship Group Standings

The U.S. will compete in Group B alongside Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland at WP Centrium in Red Deer, Alberta for the preliminary round. Team USA will open play on Sunday, Dec. 26, against Slovakia.
