Richard Sherman Agrees to Deal With 49ers

On Saturday evening, sources say that Richard Sherman has agreed to a deal with long time division rival San Francisco 49ers. The agreed upon contract is for three years, $39M with a $5M signing bonus.

The four-time All-Pro cornerback was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, and it didn’t take long for him to find a new squad. Rumors of the deal arose immediately on Friday, after Sherman was seen having dinner Friday night with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Sherman had planned meetings next week with other teams, but obviously those are canceled now.

Sherman is entering his eighth season out of Stanford, battling his way back from injury. He ended his disappointing season in week 10, after tearing his Achilles. If the former ball hawk can get back to locking down opposing receivers all game, the 49ers got a good deal for a top-tier player. Sherman leads the league with 32 interceptions since entering the NFL in 2011 as a fifth round pick. He also leads with passed defended (99) and completion percentage allowed (47.4).

The Seahawks are falling apart and the Cardinals are still in need of someone to throw the ball to Larry Fitzgerald, so the 49ers may be in a position to compete for the second spot in the NFC West. While they still have plenty of money to spend, it seems they are still a ways away from competing with the Rams, who recently bolstered their secondary by acquiring Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters and Sam Shields.

Will Jimmy Garoppolo continue his red-hot play and do enough offensively to make the 49ers the competitor that Richard Sherman claimed he was looking for? I guess time will only tell, but it would help if they signed someone besides Marquise Goodwin to catch the football.
