Herring vs Stevenson Fight Preview

Saturday night’s WBO Junior Lightweight Championship fight features a pair of former U.S. Olympic boxers who now find themselves on opposing sides. Herring, the reigning champion, has successfully defended his title three times, most recently with a knockout victory over Carl Frampton back in April 2021. Frampton, a former two-weight world champion, was chasing his swan song but came up short, retiring shortly after the loss.

The victory for Herring was his seventh consecutive, including a disqualification win over Jonathan Oquendo last September. Herring’s heavy left hand is his greatest weapon against Stevenson, a fellow lefty. What impact it has on Stevenson, however, will be something to watch.

The former WBO Featherweight World Champion, Stevenson left his belt behind when he committed to stepping up to the junior lightweight division. He’s handled himself fine, owning a 3-0 record in the heavier class. His last two fights have gone the distance, including the WBO Junior Lightweight Interim Championship this summer over Jeremia Nakathila. With the “champion” designation officially belonging to Herring, the stage is set for Saturday’s main event.
